Lombok is a small paradise island located a short boat ride away from the East of the popular tourist destination, Bali. The Indonesian island is filled with luscious jungles and surrounded by the warm Indian ocean. Lombok is popular for its white sandy beaches and ideal surfing locations where many tourists seem drawn to on their vacation. The island is also home to Mount Rinjani, the second-highest volcano in Indonesia. Warm weather, tropical waters, and rich culture are always present in Lombok. Due to the lack of transport to the island, it hasn’t been subject to over tourism and is considered an untouched beauty. The island consists of 5 regions and multiple tribes that rely on various crafts and agriculture to earn a living.

A Paradise for Tourists in the Nusa Tenggara Islands

Founded by farmers in the early 17th Century, Lombok has come through many challenges to earn its place as a tourist hotspot in modern times. A background of political unrest, corruption, crime, and natural disasters had always kept visitors at bay. However, over the past 20 years new government structure and increased tourism has excelled the island of Lombok into popularity. Visitors are keen to take a short boat ride to paradise, discover the Gili Islands, and relax in the “slower” version of Bali.

The Land of The Mosques

Lombok consists of a population that is 80% Muslim and is named “The Land of the Mosques” due to having over 1,000 mosques on the island. Lombok thrives on its culture and most of the residents here are members of the Orang Sasak Tribe who were believed to have migrated from Java & Sumbawa. Unlike other locations in Indonesia, such as Bali, Lombok has a relatively slow pace of life. Things are much quieter and locals & tourists can enjoy handmade crafts, local produce, and thriving marketplaces.

Trying to Rebuild from a Devastating Earthquake

On the 5th August 2018, Lombok was heavily affected by an earthquake that struck the island. Causing widespread destruction, creating tsunamis, and ruining buildings, the earthquake destroyed people's livelihoods. Despite tourism increasing on the island, social and economic issues still exist. There is a lack of unemployment, poor sanitary conditions, and a lack of access to proper education.
